Legislative and Policy Issues

Personal political involvement can be very effective. Use the links on the right to download a list with contact information for all Representatives or Senators, find the names of your legislators, or determine the status of specific bills. You can also:

  • Call the legislative switchboard at during the legislative session to contact your legislator or a legislative staff member.
  • Contact the Legislative Council Service for technical questions about the New Mexico Legislature website or for general questions about the legislature.

Nurse practitioners in New Mexico enjoy a very favorable practice environment, but we have to be constantly vigilant to issues that could change this situation. As a purely volunteer-driven organization, it's impossible for even the most dedicated and committed NMNPC members to spend the time it takes to stay well informed and maintain important contacts with key state legislators and other individuals who affect health policy in New Mexico. LInda Siegle, JD, is the NMNPC lobbyist. She works year-round to monitor issues important to nurse practitioners.

Some of Ms. Siegle's recent accomplishments for all nurse practitioners in New Mexico:

    • We no longer pay gross receipts tax for many health care services we provide.
    • We're eligible for a special rural tax credit of $3000 that comes directly off our income.
    • For more information and to download a Rural Practitioner Tax Credit Combined Application go to the New Mexico Department of Health website.

    • We can now declare death and sign death certificates.
    • We have continued to avoid legislation that would have created a physician-controlled "super board" charged to make recommendations to legislators for any change in our scope of practice.
    • We're included in Medical Home legislation.

Other on-going efforts of our lobbyist include:

    • Working to achieve malpractice equity.
    • Monitoring issues that may affect our practice environment.

Our lobbyist's work benefits members of NMNPC and also non-members - we ask every nurse practitioner in New Mexico to contribute what you can to help support this important activity. To make a contribution now, click here. Thank you to all current contributors to our lobbyist fund!
