  • To be licensed in New Mexico, nurse practitioners must be nationally certified. Information about national certification is available from the following organizations:

American College of Nurse Practitioners

  • The NMBON requires all NPs to maintain a prescribing formulary. NPs may choose to use the formulary provided by NMNPC.
  • Once licensed as a nurse practitioner, NPs must obtain a New Mexico Controlled Substance License in order to prescribe controlled substances. Apply at the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy website or call them at (505) 941-9102 for further information.
  • After obtaining a New Mexico Controlled Substance License, NPs may apply for a federal DEA license. Visit the DEA website for online application or to download a PDF file for mail-in application.
