NMNPC Lobbyist

Nurse practitioners in New Mexico enjoy a very favorable practice environment that gives us great freedom and flexibility to provide the excellent care our patients expect from us. However, we know we have to be alert to issues that could change this situation. It's impossible for even the most dedicated and committed NMNPC members to spend the time it takes to stay well-informed on all the issues in addition to maintaining  important contacts with key state legislators and other individuals who affect health policy in New Mexico. NMNPC addresses this by contracting with a lobbyist to help us in those areas. Linda Siegle works year-round to monitor issues important to all nurse practitioners in New Mexico.

Some of Ms. Siegle's accomplishments include:

  • Hospitals and other health care facilities must use the same criteria to grant patient admitting, discharge or ongoing patient care privileges for NPs as for physicians.
  • NPs no longer pay gross receipts tax for many health care services we provide.
  • NPs are eligible for a special rural tax credit of $3000 that comes directly off our income.
  • NPs can now declare death and sign death certificates.
  • We have continued to avoid legislation that would created a physician-controlled "super board" charged to make recommendations to legislators for any change in our scope of practice.
  • We're included in Medical Home legislation.
Other on-going efforts of our lobbyist include:
  • Working to achieve malpractice equity.
  • Monitoring issues that may affect our practice environment.

Our lobbyist's work benefits members of NMNPC and also non-members - we ask every nurse practitioner in New Mexico to contribute what you can to help support this important activity.
