Elizabeth R. Berrey PhD, MSN, BSN, RN retired in 2014 as the Associate Director of Nursing Education for the New Mexico Board of Nursing.  “I am honored to be one of the recipients of the 2019 Nursing Legend Awards,” said Dr. Elizabeth R. Berrey, PhD, MS, BSN, RN. "I come from a long line of women of courage, of passion, of intellect, of determined persistence, of honest forthrightness, and hopeful expectation from our foresisters in nursing. Against great odds, they changed nursing and nursing education. Inspired by them, I came to New Mexico to carry forward the vision of improving nursing education in this state. I am proud to have been one of the initial nurse educators on the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium Leadership Team, developing our statewide nursing curriculum, and helping to bring that curriculum to Central New Mexico Community College (CNM). Because of our collegial work across the state, the quality of nursing education and practice here in New Mexico has been forever changed for the good."

"I’m a bit overwhelmed to be honored as one of the Nursing Legend Awards recipients from the Center for Nursing Excellence,” said Kate Goldblum MSN, FNP-BC. “Being a nurse has been so much a part of my life and nothing in my career was more important than knowing I was able to touch the lives of my patients in ways that were meaningful and important to them. I never needed more than that knowledge to feel my career was worthwhile, but receiving this award is an amazing recognition from my colleagues that means more to me than I could ever express in words."

Julie Dax RN, BSN, MSN retired as an RN Educator for Clinical Education for the University of New Mexico Hospital. “The focus of my career was to be of service to patients, of course. And I hope my passion for education and for helping my fellow nurses and other health care providers reach their full potential has served the nursing profession well.  I believe that helping people is the true reward for nurses, and I am truly humbled t0 be recognized by the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence as one of this year’s recipients of the Nursing Legend Awards.”

Jennifer Averill, PhD, RN retired in 2018 as a tenured Associate Professor Emerita from the College of Nursing at the University of New Mexico. Here is what she said about the award: “Over my 41 years of working in the nursing profession (from nurse’s aide, through LPN, BSN, MSN, PhD), my intent was to help people live better lives and to have the opportunity to live in a socially just manner. I have enjoyed rich experiences in the clinical, educational and research-intensive sectors of my career. I always held a special love for the varied cultural groups living in rural areas of the southwestern US. To receive recognition from my peers and the people I served means more to me than any other recognition. I am truly honored and humbled to have my work across our state be recognized by being one of the recipients of the 2019 Nursing Legend Awards.”
