The Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign

Established in 1992, the Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign (the Campaign) is a coalition of over 170 organizations, both statewide and local. In addition, the Campaign has thousands of individual supporters across the state. NMNPC endorsed the Campaign and joined their supporters in 2006. Members and supporters include a broad range of organizations, business owners, farmers and ranchers as well as groups who advocate for low-income and homeless New Mexicans. The Campaign seeks to establish a system of guaranteed, comprehensive and affordable health care coverage in New Mexico. The Health Security Plan they developed resulted from continual public input and according to the Campaign’s website, it has “evolved into a New Mexico health care reform solution that is not an imitation of any other state’s proposal or any other country’s system.”

To enact the Health Security Plan, the Campaign has introduced legislation in the New Mexico legislature several times. This legislation (the Health Security Act) would allow the Campaign to set up a health care plan in New Mexico, structuring it “like a cooperative, with freedom of choice of health care provider and a comprehensive benefit package.”

NMNPC has continued to educate our members about the Campaign and its proposal for universal health care coverage in New Mexico. For additional information or if you have questions, please visit the Campaign’s website. You may also download the following documents for more information.
