Spotlight on Barbara Lane

Barbara Lane, RN, MSN, FNP received her Diploma in Nursing from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1975. In 1982, she graduated from Wichita State University with a Certificate as a Family Nurse Clinician, now referred to and one of seven remaining grandfathered Certificate New Mexico Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP). She continued her professional development at the College of the Southwest where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1987. In 1999, she completed a Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix.

Barbara has practiced in Hobbs as an FNP for 36 years in a variety of settings including the health department, women’s health, family practice and occupational medicine. She currently works as the sole provider at Southwest Medical Arts. She has a long-standing patient following of approximately 5,800 patients, and was instrumental in implementing a low-income program to increase access to care. She also displays great technical skills such as complicated laceration repairs and reading preliminary x-rays. She’s certified as a Spirometry Provider through the University of New Mexico (UNM) ECHO Program and is also a Certified Safety Equipment Inspector and Certified DOT Examiner.

Barbara’s patients and colleagues highly regard her for delivering outstanding patient care and recognize her as a professional role model. Her desire to improve health outcomes is exemplified by serving on numerous boards, including the Governor’s Prenatal Task Force, City of Hobbs Teen Task Force and Lea County Guidance Center. She has also served as an FNP preceptor for organizations including University of Texas, Texas Tech University and UNM. Most recently, Barbara mentored high school students who have an interest in the medical field.

Barbara has made great contributions to the health of her patients and as well as her community and strives to be informed and effective in her efforts to protect and promote NP’s professional interests. In 1995, she formed the Lee County Nurse Practitioner Group (LCNPG) with a dedicated emphasis on promoting excellence in practice and patient care in Lea County. She's also a member of NMNPC and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Barbara is currently a community liaison to the Covenant Health System, bridging the gap for patients requiring a higher level of care. She is also working with MyPower to empower Lea County’s youth to achieve academic success and avoid teen pregnancy. Barbara has proved to be an integral part of the healthcare team. She's instrumental in developing local monthly meetings including current updates and continuing education furthering her inter-professional collaborations. She strives to support teamwork in all aspects and is a strong advocate for patient safety. Barbara is an outstanding FNP and will continue to make great contributions to our professional community.
