NM RN/NP License Renewal

Initial & Renewal Licenses Offline in June

The NM Board of Nursing (BON) Advanced Practice Advisory Committee (APAC) learned at their May 4th meeting that there will be a system change for initial and renewal licenses requiring that the current online system will go offline and will not be available from June 11 through June 25

System Upgrade

The BON is upgrading to the Optimal Regulatory Board System (ORBS), a National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) product. ORBS will have a "soft roll out" on June 25 with a full roll out on June 27.

The upgrade to ORBS will allow nurses to complete initial license applications and renewals to be online, without waiting for a registration code, currently sent 30 days prior to license expiration. The ORBS will allow for real-time updates on the status of the application or renewal, including status of the application or renewal, and information regarding items still needed to complete the application.

A future feature of ORBS will be utilization of CEBroker. This will enable nurses to upload their continuing education into the system. A representative of ORBS told the NM BON Advanced Practice Advisory Committee that CEBroker will interface with our the national certifying bodies for NPs (ANCC and AANP).

Early Renewal Available for Affected NPs

The BON has confirmed that they have provided nurses who are due for license renewal during the period of the transition with a registration code allowing them to renew early. Normally, nurses may only submit a renewal application within a 30-day window prior to license expiration. The registration code from the BON permits early renewal.

What Should Affected Nurses Do?
  • If you need to renew your RN and NP licenses during the offline period June 11 to June 25, plan to renew early.
  • Make sure you got an early registration code from the BON. If you didn't, contact them immediately - be proactive, not reactive!
