New mexico NP requirements
rn licensureA current, unencumbered New Mexico RN license or a compact multi-state RN license is a pre-requisite before applying for an NP license. Applicants for licensure in New Mexico must complete a state and national criminal background check including fingerprinting at their own cost. Use the link below to access the New Mexico Board of Nursing (NMBON) website, click on rules and scroll down to Part 2 (16.12.2 NMAC) which outlines all requirements for licensure. Applicants who hold a current RN license in good standing in an eligible jurisdiction other than New Mexico are eligible for an expedited license (see paragraph L of 16.12.2.9).
np educationAs of January 1, 2001, applicants must have completed a master's level or higher nursing program. Programs must be from an accredited institution of higher education or the armed services and intended for the education and preparation of nurse practitioners as providers of primary, acute, chronic, long-term or end of life health care. Documentation of education must include the date of graduation, credentials conferred and number of supervised clinical hours as a nurse practitioner in the education program. Use the link below to access the NMBON website, click on rules, scroll down to NMAC Part 2 and see section 16.12.2.12 for the full NP licensure requirements.
national certificationTo be licensed in New Mexico, nurse practitioners must be nationally certified. Please note that NPs practicing at any time without a valid and current national certification are subject to review and discipline by the the NMBON. Examples of national certifications available include family, gerontology (primary and acute care), pediatric (primary and acute care), psychiatric-mental health, women's health, neonatal and emergency. Use the links below for information about national certifications available through the following organizations:
American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) continuing educationA recognized approval body must approve CE activities and the CE must enhance the NP's scope of professional development to meet the CE requirements for renewing licensure in New Mexico. RN license renewal requires 30 hours of CE during each renewal period. NPs may use verification of certification or recertification granted by a national professional organization which uses criteria designed to recognize competence in a specialized area of nursing practice in lieu of those 30 required hours. NP license renewal requires five hours of CE in the management of non-cancer pain for NPs with DEA registration at any time during their most recent renewal period. All NPs (with or without DEA registration) must submit a copy of their national certification during each renewal period.
prescribing formularyThe Nursing Practice Act (NPA) requires CNPs, CRNAs and CNSs to maintain a formulary (see 61-3-23.2 paragraph C; 61-3-23.3 paragraph E; 61-3-23.4 paragraph D). NMNPC has been working to remove the requirements but as of the 2023 New Mexico legislative session, it's still required by the NPA. All NPs must upload a copy of their formulary to the NMBON nursing portal (NURSYS) each renewal period. Use the button below for a memo from the NMBON about this requirement. The memo includes step-by-step instructions for uploading your formulary to the nursing portal. The NMBON does not require NPs to use the formulary they provide so NPs may continue to use their current formulary. Use the button below to download the updated formulary. Please note that the NMBON formulary is an updated version of the one NMNPC previously provided to our members. NPs who have used the version previously provided by NMNPC should download and use the updated NMBON version. It remains category-based so it's simple and efficient.
